Welcome to my 24-hour media diary for Friday, Jan 16! As Fridays are an open day for me, free from classes and work for this week, it felt like it’d be the best day to focus my media diary on. While I would love to say I stick to a low screen time, after a month of winter break my screen time has risen by a lot, so this was a good way to see what my current baseline is, and how I want to reduce screen time or change the media I take in every day.
8:30 – Twitter, Instagram
Like most people, I tend to check social media right after waking up. Even on days where I don’t have to rush to get to class, I try to limit my allowance to 30 minutes right after I wake up. This way, I’m not wasting my day in bed endlessly scrolling. The first app I check is Twitter (or X, however you prefer to refer to it), and I will spend most of my time checking in on news and different events related to fanbases I’m in, ranging from D.C comics to hockey. I’ll then move to Instagram and see if there was any events or updates from friends that I missed during my offline time. I do keep a screen time limiter on my phone which means I do have to be intentional about the time I spend on socials which has definitely helped reduce my usage.
9:00 – 10:30 – Music
I like to start my mornings off by going to the gym, which during this time I’ll cycle through recent album releases or a playlist. This just helps me concentrate more and relax a bit during the gym which makes the experience a lot more enjoyable.
12:30-1:30 – Interview Prep
I had a virtual recorded interview for an internship I was planning to take later in the day, so I spent a few hours over the last few days, but especially today, reviewing and preparing. During this time, I went over the job description, my resume, different practice questions, and tried to nail down the stories I wanted to mention as well as responses I could be confident in.
1:30 – 2:30 – Tik Tok Break
After about an hour of interview prep I let myself relax a little bit with a short break on TikTok. It was my first time going on it of the day so I caught up on any of the videos my friends had sent me and let myself zone out until my timer was up.
2:30 – 3:00 – Interview Prep
Back to my laptop, I went and finished out some Interview prep. This internship was a dream, so I was really trying my best to make sure I was confident going into the interview. While the format of the first interview was all virtual, letting me retake my responses as much as I wanted, I still wanted to be as prepared as possible.
3:00-3:30 – Music
I had a meeting with my boss for work regarding getting back on the schedule. I had been studying abroad last semester, so I was fortunate enough to be able to come back and return to a job that I really enjoy. On my drive, I listened to some music, listening mostly to Harry Styles in preparation for his new album.
4:30 – 5:30 – Instagram, TikTok
After my meeting with my boss I gave myself another break when I got home. This time I went through Instagram and TikTok, doing my best to relax before I’d be taking my interview
6:00 – 8:00 – Interview
I worked on my interview for about two hours. While I prepared a lot and felt confident, I am also a crazy perfectionist. Thanks to being given the option to redo my responses as many times as I wanted, I did take after take to make sure it was perfect. This, of course, led to me taking forever to complete it, but I’m happy with the answers I was able to give!
9:30 – 10:00 – Music
My roommate and I were meeting some friends for drinks to catch up after winter break (and study abroad for me), so I listened to some music while getting ready. Music is something I listen to almost constantly through the day, so I apologize if it got a little redundant, but what can I say, music is my favorite thing in the world.
